Marinas & Boating

Boating and Marinas in the Fort Lauderdale Area

Often called the Yachting Capital of the World, Fort Lauderdale clearly stands out as the place to be boating. Whether you own a little runabout, a cabin cruiser or a megayacht, finding dockage and facilities is no problem. Maintaining your vessel, or having a complete refit can be done at any number of boatyards around town. There are numerous yacht chandleries, nautical stores offering clothing and decor, marine electronics companies, refitters, yacht brokerages and crew agencies.

If you want to do some deep sea sport fishing, or try your luck catching a snook or tarpon in the inland waterways, there are several local excellent guides to take you on an exciting fishing expedition!

“Sailing Directions” is a novelized memoir of grief and recovery set aboard a luxurious sailing yacht traveling the Greek Islands, based on the personal experience of the author. Is it possible that taking a job as cook on a luxurious sailing yacht, and getting away from her own small town can help Nina get over the death of her beloved husband, Jake? Her friend Alex thinks so, and convinces her to come to Greece where he’s captain of Desiree, a one hundred foot beauty owned by a ruthless American financier known to his crew as the Boss.

Grand Ambition – An Extraordinary Yacht, The People Who Built It, And the Millionaire Who Can’t Really Afford It!

“Bruce Knecht is my kind of reporter- a master story teller with a great eye for tales of our time.  Grand Ambition is centered around the building of a huge yacht, but is ultimately about our bipolar society- the rarefied lifestyles of the very very rich and the day-to-day realities of blue-collar laborers who have never worked indoors or been paid more than $20 an hour.”   Tom Brokaw

Here are a couple stops Bruce made this week to talk about his latest book – and some publications that reported on it!  The New York Times kicked things off last Thursday with a Q&A ( ). Fortune published a review on Friday and the New York Post had a two-page spread in its Sunday paper. I spoke about the book on Fox News Radio yesterday and the Wall Street Journal’s review is scheduled for Saturday.

You can order Grand Ambition from your favorite local bookseller or online from either Amazon ( ) or Barnes & Noble (

Bruce Knecht is a former senior writer and foreign correspondent for the Wall Street Journal – and author of the book – Proving Ground: The Inside Story of the 1998 Sydney to Hobart Race as well as Hooked: Pirates, Poaching and the Perfect Fish for the Atlantic Monthly. He resides in NYC.

Returning Spring 2014!  The Marine Flea Market is recognized as the largest event of its type in the world. Private individuals and corporate vendors sell marine equipment, coral encrusted antiques, used boats, fishing tackle, diving gear, marine artwork and other boating related items in a pleasant, almost party-like, atmosphere. The Dania Marine Flea Market provides the ideal environment for buyer and seller to engage in friendly and, sometimes, intense ‘bargaining.’ Thousands of boating related items are bought and sold through a system of dickering and dealing at a fraction of their retail value.

NBT Cool Touch vinyl

My boat upholstery guru, Rich Chanin of Wycap Design here in Fort Lauderdale, tells me that recent innovative advances in vinyl fabric technology have made it possible to reduce temperatures in dark colored boating upholstery to a point where they can be as cool to the posterior touch as previous neutral colored coverings. Apparently, SynTec Industries’ CoolTouch™ black and charcoal vinyl colors have been tested and shown to be cooler than standard neutral colored vinyl by more than 10 degrees. And this opens up a plethora of new interior design options. This new technology is changing the way designers are incorporating dark vinyl into boat interior furniture, and making sitting on your boat in our semi-tropical sun more inviting. No ifs, ands, or but(t)s about it.

Joy St

Mercury Marine this week brought joy to the owners of boats in approximately the 25’ to 40’ range, with the introduction of its Axius joystick piloting system. According to the company, Axius is a revolutionary control system that turns the most stressful part of boating into something enjoyable. Suited for dual stern drive boat packages from 17 to 46 feet, the Aldus system affords a previously unknown level of control precision when maneuvering and docking. Operating without the need for a bow thruster, Joystick Piloting employs independently articulating outboards with counter-rotating propellers. The pinpoint accuracy of incorporated Smartcraft® Digital Throttle and Shift Precision, coupled with the integrated, intuitive operation of joystick based control, promises to make boating not only easier for many, but more enJOYable as well by Phil Friedman, Dwight Tracy & Friends Yacht Sales, Fort Lauderdale

Song of the Mokihana

Written By Australian Author & Sailor, David Matzenik

Available by Amazon Digital Services, Inc Click link to order book.

In the Dangerous Archipelago north of Tahiti, Henry Ka’imiloa Keenan is forced to beach his old schooner for repairs. The turmoil of World War seems far away until Keenan meets Matildhe Kolbe, a fugitive from German New Guinea. She fears Keenan might give her up to the authorities, but Keenan also needs to avoid the French while poaching colonial trade. A vortex of jealousy and suspicion, Song of the Mokihana is also a lyrical tale of lovers from multi-racial backgrounds, and the conflicting allegiances neither is prepared to abandon. Against a panorama of grand trade wind seascapes, Keenan and Matildhe find occult and mystical influences are not completely displaced by the strategic imperatives of the new century. Includes contemporary illustrations and appendix.
